SHIPMENT AND STORAGE

The most important factor in obtaining accurate results is to ensure that the composite sample submitted to our laboratory is representative of the whole lot. Please use the information below as a guide when taking your samples:

Grains, Rations and Supplements
Extract 10-20 samples from the tailgate at unloading to make up at least 450 grams. A minimum of 1 kg should be sampled for Ergot testing. Grain probes are available for use free of charge.

Hays
Using a core sampler, take 10-20 samples from varying locations throughout the lot to obtain at least 250 grams. A forage sampler is available for use free of charge.

Silages and TMRs (Complete Feeds)
Combine 3-5 samples taken from each of three feedings to obtain 250 grams for silages and 450 grams for TMRs.

Water
Samples should be submitted in water sample bottles provided by our laboratory to reduce the chance of contamination. Water samples for bacterial analysis require special attention, please contact our laboratory for special sampling information.

Personal Service
Please phone and ask to speak to our marketing and research representative for information on proper sampling techniques. On site sampling services and literature are available upon request.

Sampling Suppliers
Complimentary analysis request forms, sample bags and water sample bottles are available from our laboratory. "Central Packs" are also available at your nearest Alberta Agriculture District office.
